PLA vs PETG vs ABS: Material Engineering Guide

Understanding thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of standard 3D printing filaments prevents failed prints and structural part deformation.

  • PLA (Polylactic Acid): Rigid, biodegradable, low shrinkage, ideal for aesthetic prototypes. Glass transition temperature: ~60°C.
  • PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol): Impact resistant, water impermeable, flexible, ideal for functional brackets. Glass transition temperature: ~80°C.
  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): High impact resistance and heat tolerance (100°C), but susceptible to thermal draft warping requiring an enclosure.
